Watering without a rigid calendar
Correct watering is a cycle: enough water, complete drainage and a real dry pause. A calendar only guides; the plant and substrate decide.
Water deeply and let dry
When the substrate is dry, water until it exits the drainage holes. Then remove any excess from saucers or cachepots. Repeated small sips can deform growth and keep wet pockets.
Before watering, weigh the pot, touch the mix and read the body. A firm cactus in winter does not need water by routine.
After shipping or repotting
A bare-root plant may have invisible micro-injuries. Give it days of filtered light and air before the first watering. If potted into a dry mix, wait until roots settle and weather allows drying.
The first watering should be quiet: no strong fertilizer, no extreme sun and no standing water.
Winter and summer heat
In winter, lower light and cool nights reduce water use. Keep dry rest unless there is severe shriveling. In summer, more heat does not always mean more water: some plants slow during extremes; water when nights and airflow allow drying.
More water makes sense only with light, moderate warmth, air and active roots.
